If you are a first time cruiser, gratuities can come as a bit of a shock. It's not something you budgeted for and you suddenly have extra costs added to your onboard account.
Some cruise lines incorporate 'gratuities' into the fare you pay upfront, and, most now offer a option to pre-pay your gratuities before boarding.
It is a really good idea to research the cruise line policy and the how much the cruise gratuity fee is. It will show as a daily fee, which can vary depending on your type of stateroom.
You should budget this into the total cost of your cruise.

In the current climate, cruise lines are looking for ways to increase their income. Gratuities is one option for this.
Celebrity cruises have just updated their 'FAQ' to show a gratuities increase from 11th July 2023. I understand this is the second time in a year, that Celebrity has increased charges.
Are they setting a precedent and will the other cruise lines follow suit?
The important thing to remember, always check the details on gratuities before you book your cruise. Factor the cost into your total holiday budget.
If you are offered the option to pay in advance, this may be advantageous if you are booking a year or more in advance, as you will be locking in the current rate and the cruise line will not charge you extra if they increase rates after you have booked.
If the cruise line offer you a 'package' which includes gratuities, look at the small print. What is offered? Will you make use of the extra's, or is it better value to just pay your gratuities separately.
One last thought. Cash flow. You pay early the cruise line has your cash. Is it better keeping those pennies in your savings account? Probably only relevant if you like to book far in advance.
